  • Definitions:
  • » Standards are descriptions of clinical practice and patient outcome to which values and judgements can be attached either by professionals or lay people.  They are used to evaluate and distinguish good practice from poor.
  • » Guidelines are statements or pathways describing optimal contemporary clinical practice that are based on evidence and collective expert opinion, and generalisable to a group of patients. These are drawn up to assist clinicians in formulating treatment plans for an individual patient.
  • »Advice on guideline writing can be found on the Guideline writing pageopens in a new window.
  • » Standards and guidelines together are tools linked to audit and research, and are used in the critical analysis of past practice and the setting of targets for the future.

Remit:
Development of standards and guidelines for all aspects of nephrology. Standards and guidelines selected for preparation by individuals/teams will be notified to Dr Rees who will ensure that there is no duplication. It is hoped that all trainees will select a guideline during their training.

  • The format will be as follows:
  • » a. The guideline statements, with the level of evidence stated after in parentheses as (Evidence) or  (Good Practice) or (In the opinion of the working group)
  • » b. The audit measures associated with each guideline and a timeframe over which these audit points should be evaluated
  • » c. A description of the evidence base used to prepare the guideline
  • » d. The references
  • » e. Cross reference to other relevant standards and websites where applicable
  • » f. The document will state ‘draft’ and give the date of completion, authorship and version number

Draft standards and guidelines will be posted on the BAPN website and the BAPN membership will be notified and invited to comment. Members will be able to post their views on the website over the next 2 months.

  • » The author(s) will respond to comments directly onto the BAPN website.
  • » The author(s) will collate all the comments and incorporate any necessary changes into the document.
  • » When all comments have been responded to by the author the document will pass to the subcommittee who will adjudicate in situations of disagreement between the authors and BAPN membership. If necessary the document may be sent to an expert in the field.
  • » The final document will have a proposed date for revision or reassessment.

When the review process is finished the standard/guideline will be posted on the website in final form. Patient Care Surveys:
The BAPN Clinical Standards and Guidelines Committee, with the help of Dr Lesley Rees, have developed patient care surveys that may be used to assess patient / parent satisfaction with dialysis and transplantation services within renal units.  These surveys are published below, in draft format, and we welcome comments from the BAPN membership regarding their utility, and comments for improvement.  The consultation period will last until April 30th.  Following this period, the final surveys will be published on the website, for units to use if they wish.

Please send any comments regarding the surveys to David.Milford@ bch.nhs.uk

Kidney Care Plans
NHS Kidney Care has kindly made the following care plans available to BAPN members.  These are modifiable documents that may be useful in planning the care of our patients, and are a written document that patients can keep with them. The Clinical Standards and Guidelines committee and NHS Kidney Care are interested in knowing whether you find the care plans useful, and we welcome comments regarding their use.

Please send such feedback to David.Milford@bch.nhs.uk
