About the department:
The department was started in 1995 with the appointment of Dr Mary Waldron as a single-handed consultant. A second consultant was appointed in 2000 and the department grew to three consultants in 2005. We provide a service to Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Dorset, West Sussex, South Wiltshire and the channel Isles. Regional Clinics are held in Winchester, Basingstoke and Dorchester.
We provide a comprehensive service except for transplantation and the immediate follow-up of transplant recipients, which are usually done in London at the Evilina Children’s Hospital. Southampton has a wide range of specialist paediatric services including neonatology, cardiology, oncology, neurology, general surgery, gastro-enterology, respiratory medicine, intensive care and infectios diseases and immunology. Much of our work involves consultation on patients in other wards.
We are closely integrated with the urology service to form a nephro-urology unit. We were the first in the country to adopt this integrated approach.
Special interests include renal stone disease, calcium metabolism and renal tubular disorders.
We have an active clinical research programme and members of the unit regularly publish papers and give presentations at local, national and international meetings.
