About the unit:
Unit was developed by Professor Ian Houston, starting in 1967 with acute renal failure services. The Paediatric Haemodialysis unit opened in 1969, one of the first dedicated units for children. Manchester’s first renal transplant was performed in 1972 the first chronic peritoneal dialysis patient was taken on in1974. The first kidney transplant to be performed in the Children’s Hospital was in1982. The first simultaneous Kidney-Pancreas Transplants to be performed in the UK were performed in Manchester in 2005.
