About the unit:
The first dedicated renal ward at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow opened in 1972, under the supervision of Dr Anna Murphy. This was an 8 bedded ward on the first floor of the hospital, ward 1c. The service soon outgrew the available space, and so the British Kidney Patient Association (BKPA) provided a large two floor Yorkon Building which was opened by HRH Princess of Wales in February 1983. This building became known as the Renal Day Unit and housed an area for assessing day patients, an out-patient clinic and a haemodialysis area, as well as parent and staff accommodation, a library and a seminar room.
Again the service expanded and the BKPA came to our rescue again, providing funds which allowed the development of the present Renal Unit, located on the 6th Floor of the stack block at RHSC. This unit, the Elizabeth Ward Renal Unit, provides in-patient, out-patient, haemodialysis and day case accomodation within one enclosed area.
The renal unit at RHSC provides acute and chronic renal replacement therapy for all children in Scotland, working through a managed clinical network for paediatric nephrology with paediatric and adult colleagues throughout the country. All renal transplants are performed on the RHSC site, with post transplant care being provided as close to home as possible. All acute and chronic haemodialysis occurs on site, with patients on peritoneal dialysis being admitted initially to RHSC, with subsequent care being as local as possible.
The first paediatric renal transplant in RHSC was performed in March 1977 so our 40th anniversary is approaching.
