Children's Kidney Centre (CKC)
History:
The welsh paediatric renal service was established in the mid 1980's from the Cardiff Royal Infirmary. In 1990 the inpatient service was moved to the University Hospital of Wales site, followed by the ambulatory service in 1995. The Children's Hospital for Wales opened in 2004. The renal service will be incorporated into the CHfW site as part of the phase 2 development. The service provides tertiary nephrology care to the children of South and Mid Wales. There are 4 dedicated renal inpatient beds available on Heulwen Ward UHW. The CKC provides outpatient services and is the base for ambulatory service for children requiring renal replacement therapy, including pre and post transplant care. The unit is supported by having access to paediatric critical care and surgical services on site. There are strong links with the Bristol Renal Unit which provides the regional paediatric transplant surgical service. The unit offers a multi-disciplinary team approach with a strong outreach service enabling high quality care to be provided close to home.
