Department of Paediatric Nephrology
History:
Paediatric Nephrology was established in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children by Professor Maurice Savage in 1980. Initially paediatric transplantation for small children took place here and larger children were transplanted in Belfast City Hospital. Since 1996 all paediatric transplantation has taken place here. The unit has three haemodialysis stations and inpatients occupy 4-6 beds in an 18 bedded medical ward.
The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children is a 120 bedded regional Hospital but plans have been approved for a new £316m Women & Children's Hospital with an estimated completion date of 2012. This will contain a purpose built nephro-urology unit.
